Architecting Robust Microservices with Spring Boot and MongoDB

Building a scalable system requires more than just clean code; it requires a thoughtful orchestration of data persistence, monitoring, and security. In our work on the Energix_Final project, we focused on implementing a resilient service architecture that balances rapid development with production-grade stability.

The Foundation: Repository Pattern and Persistence

When scaling a backend, the way you interact with your database determines your long-term maintainability. By utilizing the Repository Pattern with Spring Boot and MongoDB, we decoupled our business logic from the underlying data access layer. This allows us to swap storage strategies or optimize queries without rippling changes throughout the application.

@Repository
public interface EnergyDataRepository extends MongoRepository<EnergyRecord, String> {
    List<EnergyRecord> findByDeviceId(String deviceId);
}

This simple interface provides a clean API for the service layer, keeping the implementation details of MongoDB hidden while ensuring type-safe access to our energy datasets.

Securing and Monitoring the Flow

As the project grew, we introduced JWT for robust authentication and Prometheus for telemetry. A system is only as good as its observability. By integrating Prometheus, we gained deep insights into request latency and error rates, allowing us to proactively manage the health of our REST endpoints.

For security, implementing a standard JWT-based auth flow ensures that our REST API interactions remain stateless and scalable. Using Swagger/OpenAPI alongside these components ensures that our team can easily document and test these endpoints as the codebase evolves.

The Lesson

Consistency in architectural patterns pays dividends. By combining Tailwind CSS for frontend responsiveness, Spring Boot for backend robustness, and Redis for caching, we created a stack that is both performant and developer-friendly. Always focus on building modular components; it simplifies testing, improves readability, and makes future refactoring significantly less painful.
