Starting Fresh: Architecting for Scalability in TypeScript

Starting a new project often feels like standing before a blank canvas, but the decisions you make in the first commit define your velocity for months to come. With the recent launch of the alane09/invoices project, the focus was to build a foundation that prioritizes clean architecture from day one.

The Architecture Challenge

When building a system meant to handle invoicing, the complexity grows quickly. Using a Hexagonal Architecture (Ports and Adapters) ensures that the core domain logic remains isolated from external concerns like databases or UI frameworks. By treating the database as an infrastructure detail, we ensure that the business logic stays testable and agnostic of the underlying persistence layer.

Implementation Strategy

To manage dependencies, I am leveraging the Singleton Pattern for infrastructure providers. This ensures that services like database connections are instantiated once and shared across the application, preventing overhead.

class DatabaseConnection {
  private static instance: DatabaseConnection;

  private constructor() {}

  public static getInstance(): DatabaseConnection {
    if (!DatabaseConnection.instance) {
      DatabaseConnection.instance = new DatabaseConnection();
    }
    return DatabaseConnection.instance;
  }
}

This snippet demonstrates the base implementation for managing a singular connection instance, ensuring the application maintains a lean footprint while interacting with MongoDB.

The Takeaway

By choosing TypeScript with a Hexagonal approach from the start, we eliminate the "spaghetti code" trap common in rapid-growth projects. Whether it is Axios handling external API requests or Next.js routing, the separation of concerns allows each layer to evolve independently. Start with a solid plan, enforce boundaries, and your codebase will thank you later.
